About Me, Now & Then

I am revamping my About Me page, but liked this one, so I'm saving it here for you. If you want the answer to my trivia, comment with what you think the right answer is and I'll post the correct one tomorrow.

I have been bitten by an alligator. I once performed surgery on a cat. I have three tattoos in places you can't see.

One of these is a lie. Think you know which one? Comment and I'll tell you. There is no prize, however, for being correct.

Here are some real things you should know about me. I like to keep things interesting, which means that I still climb trees and try not to worry about what other moms in their 30s think about that. I never thought I'd be a mother because I don't automatically squeal when I see babies. I love my own, more than I thought possible, and am figuring out this parenting thing with the help of my husband, who is a much nicer person than I am. We have three boys, two human and one canine. We live in Houston. Though I'm a big supporter of home birth, I flunked out two times. Instead, I advocate for birth choice and smart women.

I haven't found a non-cheesy way to say that I am a Christian, so if you know of one, do share. I try to live a transparent and authentic life, which means I screw up all the time but attempt to be honest about that. If I didn't screw up, I wouldn't need Jesus in the first place.

As a child, I wanted to grow up and be a roller skater. I'm fulfilling that dream by skating with Houston Roller Derby--that is, when I'm not pregnant or recovering from being pregnant. This means I get to wear fishnets and, when I'm lucky, come home with a black eye. On skates I am remotely athletic and coordinated, and that is the only time. I hope in my lifetime to see derby in the Olympics.

A few years ago, I got my MFA in Fiction from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a school with a great writing program and a name that is just too long.  One day my job of writing novels will be a paying gig. Maybe just enough to buy some new jeans. My office is the kitchen table and my work clothes are pajamas. Coffee keeps me going.

That about sums it up. Thanks for dropping by--please come back. I like the company.
